Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXXXIV DROPDEAD

Today CVLT Nation is proud to present a rad new mixtape compiled by HC legends DROPDEAD! Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXXXIV DROPDEAD will remind you of some of the best HC made to date…so get your steel toe boots on and stomp it out below!!

It’s taken some hours to get together this playlist. Thinking back on when we started hanging out together, then playing music together… then all of a sudden it’s 25 years you’ve been friends and you’re still hanging out playing music. That’s a pretty good run for anyone. These are some of the bands we listened to a lot in the early days. Some of these songs we covered at practice for fun, some are bands we were friends with. Pre-internet. You had to write letters, trade tapes and records via real mail, building lifelong friendships, sharing what you had, one trip to the post office at a time. I still remember getting some of this music on tape in the mail, and we would all make copies to share with each other and friends around the world. I think this is a pretty good snapshot of what four guys were listening to, and I’m sure Bob and Brian would have some similar picks, and a bunch of different stuff as well. Honestly, I could easily add another 100 songs by 100 more bands, and I’d need to do a few more playlists just to cover the tons of non-Punk/HC stuff that influenced us, but let’s stick to the basics: US and International HC/Punk/Thrash whatever you want to call it. Stuff that kicked our ass and made us want to play hardcore. Thanks for the inspiration.

The almighty SLOWDIVE have reunited for a string of shows taking place this summer, and I’m ultra excited!!! Simon Scott just did something very special for the fans. He curated this really cool mixtape for Dazed Digital and it is the first SLOWDIVE mix ever. Check out the stream below and peep what Simon has to say about his song collection…

Simon Scott: “The s l o w d i v e (s l o w d a z e) mix has been compiled from some of our favourite tracks, in particular from groups less famous than The Cure or The Smiths, ranging in musical styles from post-rock to ambient, classical to ‘shoegaze’. In 1994 Slowdive were a deeply unfashionable group, especially in the UK, and struggled to play gigs to more than to a few hundred people. The press were becoming increasingly infatuated by grunge and we were the token guitar band to make disparaging remarks about. Shoegaze was a much berated genre. Each album released was received with poor reviews and one by one each shoegaze band was dropped to make way for Britpop.

Since we broke up shoegaze began to globally snowball as an influence on new artists, and today it is crossing over new musical boundaries into genres including metal and hip hop. Therefore we’ve included a few bands, not naming any names, who have gone on to form bands after hearing shoegaze music or seeing Slowdive play live back in the early 1990s. Not all tracks are shoegaze of course; Slint wrote and released their classic Spiderland album before we broke up, and David Darling is a classical cellist. It doesn’t matter, and musical boundaries are there to be broken anyway, as these different styles and individual tracks flow well together and create a vibe that feels like shoegaze tinged with each track worthy to be included whatever genre it derives

Tracklist:

Bowery Electric – “Empty Words”

One of the best things about being a part of CVLT Nation is the relationships we have with so many cool humans around the world. MASAKARI was a band that not only created a classic album in The Prophet Feeds, but also walked the walk to stand up for everything they sang about. When I got to see them live and meet them face to face, I was not disappointed at all. They were humble and super smart dudes that inspired me to keep doing what we were doing. I’m not happy to hear that MASAKARI is not a band any more, but I know that each member will go on to do killer things for the global scene we are all a part of…Today CVLT Nation celebrates our favorite moments with MASAKARI, a post that includes full sets, a mixtape, a live set download and an interview…R.I.R…Rest In Radness!

Sonic Cathedrals Mixtape Series
Vol. XI Curated by MASAKARI

CVLT Nation is ultra excited to announce that the Sonic Cathedrals Mixtape Series Vol. XI Curated by MASAKARI goes live today! This band is one of our favorite bands and also an inspiration for what we create. From the first time we heard their album The Prophet Feeds we were hooked; then came their split with Alpinist, which just blew our brains, so now we are fiends! MASAKARI has curated a mixtape that is fucking ballistic – they really focused on unsigned bands which is also makes this mixtape even more fucking killer! Enough with my talking, read what MASAKARI has to say about their mixtape below, download Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XI after the jump & blast that motherfucker beyond loud…MAKE YOUR BRAINCELLS HEAD BANG!

To us this mixtape represents many of the up and coming bands in punk and hardcore, many of who we have had the pleasure of playing (or hopefully will soon). All of these bands are hardworking individuals who we think are writing some of the best music coming out in the last few years. Many of these bands we have become friends with, which is incredibly important to us, as we feel that the community aspect of punk/hardcore is what makes it so special. This mixtape doesn’t cover everything (if that was possible it would be 100x longer!) but covers a lot of what moves us the most. Hope you enjoy!

CVLT NationDeathrock 2014 Mixtape Curated by Oliver Sheppard

Well, we’re two years into these Deathrock mixtapes, and the fascination that dark postpunk and deathrock continues to hold over the punk scene continues unabated, even if many punker-than-thou bands refuse to acknowledge their own new swing into gothic territory, proud as some would-be tastemakers are. The punk scene’s dipping into the waters of this tradition is producing, to me, some of the best new music around these days. And the best of that is represented in the mixtape below.

There is a special advance “leak” (but — an OFFICIAL leak!) of a new Christ vs Warhol song, included below. “A Drop in the Ocean.” Christ vs Warhol are a self-described “anarcho-postpunk band,” and they’re a fave of mine. Their 2010 “Dissent” LP is a must-have for anyone into this style of music. I interviewed Christ vs Warhol in my own No Doves Fly Here days, here.

Deathrock: the intersection of DIY punk rock, gothic rock, and dark post punk. Deathrock was, after all, an offshoot of the punk scene (as was gothic rock, too). For the pedants among us — and there are many of them, lord knows — “deathrock,” per se, was an historically specific milieu of dark California underground music in the 1980s, primarily localized around Los Angeles. And, yet, a newer band from Europe calling themselves “deathrock” may fit that descriptive bill more than any other genre tag available (Dystopian Society from Italy, for example – deathrock to the core, despite not being from L.A.). At this point in time, 2014, “deathrock” is just that: A descriptive genre tag. To maintain that a “real” deathrock band could not exist now is like saying a “real punk band” could not exist now, but only in the late 1970s, because that is where, historically, “punk” belongs. Well, that is wrong.

Some of the bands below may not consider themselves to be “a deathrock band.” And Andrew Eldritch insists the Sisters of Mercy are not a gothic rock band. Sorry; tough luck. If you make the music, and it sounds a certain way, and it resonates with the sonic traditions of the genre, expect the “deathrock” label, no matter how irksome you may find it. I say – like advice given to a man with a hairy back, or a small penis — this is simply how you are. Embrace it, learn to live with it, make the most of it, and love it. It’s almost disingenuously pretentious to confess to anything else. “Too punk for goth, too goth for punk.” That’s exactly what deathrock is.

All of the songs below are relevant to the continuing and vital evolution of this particularly cool genre, and all of the bands sampled below are making great music, whatever they consider themselves. This really is some of the best underground music being made nowadays, regardless of anything. It’s just amazing stuff. So, even if the band below is “not a deathrock band” [sic], the song showcased is relevant to the deathrock genre.

This is the playlist I’m gonna listen to on my way to the USA and the South by Southwest showcase. A good mix of what I have been into the last couple of months. A lot of death metal, but some other smooth stuff also. A good mix of the kind of music that speaks to me. Enjoy.
