Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXVIV ATOMCK

The countdown is almost over…tomorrow night CVLT Nation and You’re Not Human will bring down the house at The Exchange in Bristol, with a killer lineup featuring Corrupt Moral Altar, Human Cull, Burden of the Noose and ATOMCK! One more day, and one day for you to listen to the rad mixtape ATOMCK has put together for us below!

Assuming that everyone’s already heard Naplam Death and Extreme Noise Terror I thought it best to merely provide a collection of sounds off the hard-drive of this computer that I like, and that I think other people will also like. There is no real context for any of the following other than that premise.

Corupt Moral Altar (1)

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXVIV ATOMCK Track List:

• 1. huun hur tu – lament
• Huun Hur Tu hail from TUVA, small nation between Russian and Mongolia. They play a folk music that westerners call ‘throat singing’ as opposed to proper singing or something. It sounds awesome.

• 2. comus – the prisoner
• The best deranged sounding, paranoia-driven acoustic band known to me. Better than Current 93 so don’t bother putting that in the comments. As if.

• 3. rudimentary peni – vampire state building
• Squatter vibes abound with a sense of isolation and unhinged urgency. Highly recommended.

• 4. matfield and the pond – snorkeling
• This is the ‘canterbury scene’ style band that my secondary school English teacher played in before he got a real job. So I doubt you will have heard them before. #I_prefer_the_early_demos

• 5. voivod – missing sequences
• Oh all right, here’s some metal for you. Sounds like a strange mix of no-wave and Holst though so bad luck.

• 6. anchiskhati choir – alilo
• This style of music is called ‘Georgian polyphonic singing’ because it comes from Georgia and is, well, polyphonic. I like how it sounds, very uplifting.

• 7. CSSO – worst
• Ah, CLOTTED SYMMETRIC SEXUAL ORGAN, genre-mashing greatness from Nippon. Rock and roll baby!

• 8. craw – chop shop
• Craw are superb- a great mid point between the snotty punk vocals of the DK’s and the more technical approach of 90s HYDRA HEAD bands. Plus the drummer is also in KEELHAUL. And the lyrics are funny as well.

• 9. king crimson – dinosaur
• Obviously we all know the best KC stuff is from the 70s but instead why not listen to this silly tune they wrote in the 90s? It’s about how old men can still be sexually potent says Robert Fripp.

• 10. doc watson – black mountain rag
• No one plays ‘fiddle-guitar’ better than a blind dude going by the name of doc. Breezy! Enjoy life!

• 11. cementimental – humalien 002
• This will definitely be your favourite track on this mixtape if they actually publish it. Go tell me how right I was in the comments below.

• 12. colossomite – hot house
• I don’t know a huge amount about this band other than I like how they sound. The vocalist of my band got sent their CD for free when he bought something from a distro 500 years ago when people still did that.

• 13. cromagnon – caledonia
• The most listenable track from this cracked.com-infamous band of hippies, weirdos and session musicians. I like the bagpipes, reminds me of a trip to Edinburgh I once made.

• 14. khusugtun – (I have no idea what this is called, the track is spelled in cyrillic)
• This lot are from MONGOLIA. Their music has similarities to the TUVAN track I included but it’s also different and everything. Check ‘em out kids.

• 15. dave swarbick – the kid on the mountain
• Nice violin and guitar Celtic folk music because that’s what people came here for yeah. Yeah?
Yeah.

• 16. jeremey schmidt – sentionauts
• Lovely Fulchi-style soundtrack that came from the film BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW that not many people seemed to like but I did. The central refrain of this tune is cool and ominous.

• 17. yacopsae – drahtseilakt
• This is the sort of thing they were expecting me to post when I got asked to do this for the first and probably last time. Fast as hell.

• 18. tom waits – what’s he building in there?
• It’s Tom Waits. Google yo.

• 19. blind idiot god – stravinsky/blasting off
• Interesting no-vocals metallic outsider stuff here, but played really well.

• 20. gate – collapsed
• A contemporary Japanese grindcore band. Great energy, if chakras existed theirs would be wide open.

• 21. hard to swallow – needle deep
• Righteous hardcore from 90s Britain. Remember the 90s? Before WMD and everything? They were great.

• 22. alash – bashtak
• Closing out with some more nice TUVAN music. Alash are a current group with a slightly less traditional outlook. They list Jimi Hendrix as a guy they like. I also like that guy so and so do you so we all agree on something at least. Thanks for bearing with me.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXX Skeletonwitch

Here is my mix tape. It’s always difficult to make one of these. I used to make real mix tapes for people but I think if you handed someone a tape today they would ask “what the fuck is this?”

I tried to stay away from really mainstream stuff to make it interesting and maybe turn some of you onto some new stuff, but let a few mainstream gems fall through the cracks. It’s a healthy mix of Black Metal, Rock and Punk. It’s representative of what I listen to and hopefully it puts you in a really shitty and grim mood. Enjoy!

1. Taake – Fra Vadested Til Vaandesmed
This is off the latest Taake album. They are Norwegian. All their albums are gold but they really knocked it out of the park on this last one. We saw them at Party San Festival in Germany a few years back. My understanding is that one guy named Hoest writes and records everything on their albums.

2. Spite Extreme Wing – II
Well, this is kind of a weird one. Off an album called Vltra. They are an Italian “Black Metal” band. Im using that term loosely. Its kinda like Surf Rock meets Black Metal. This band is broken up but they were doing some really unique stuff on this last release.

3. Scorpions – Pictured Life
This should speak for itself. I think a lot of people hear Scorpions and think “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and “The Zoo”. The truth is these guys had some awesome records out before they became an arena rock band. This is off Virgin Killer. Also check out In Trance, Lovedrive and Taken by Force.

4. Sargeist – A Spell to Awaken the Temple
These fellas are from Finland. The best Black Metal release in the past few years in my opinion. The album it is from is called Let the Devil In. It’s awesome the whole way through. Just big melodic chords. The atmosphere of this is amazing. We met the guitar player in Helsinki . I don’t think he liked us. Whatever.

5. Roky Erickson – Two Headed Dog
One of the most underrated rock musicians in my opinion. He was singing about the occult before it was cool. I get chills listening to this song. He also was the front man in 13th Floor Elevators.

6. Ravencult – Possession on a Burial Ground
I think these guys are from Greece although they sound Scandinavian. This is off the last record they put out called Morbid Blood. I don’t know a lot about the band but the album is great. Kinda sounds like Watain but even more grimy. Maybe they smell worse too.

7. Pentagram – Be Forewarned
Here’s another hidden gem. In my opinion Pentagram should have been as big as Black Sabbath. In the past few years they have been getting their due a little bit more and people are starting to recognize them as an iconic proto-metal band. All these Pentagram songs are just chilling. They also wrote a ton of them in the 70′s. Evil stuff.

8. Craft – I Want to Commit Murder
Well…. this is super hateful black metal from Sweden. I love hateful and disgusting Black Metal. It might be the most hateful Black Metal song I’ve ever heard. If someone told me they were going to name a song this I’d tell them they were an idiot but for some reason Craft can get away with it. This is off an album called Void.

9. Rammer – This Caustic Fog
This is a Canadian Metallic-Punk band from Toronto. This is off an album called Incinerator/Krusher which is a compilation of Rammer material. They kind of flew under the radar for a lot of people outside of Canada. It’s unfortunate. I’m a huge fan and never got to see them play. Check them out. Better late than never.

10. Murder City Devils – I Drink The Wine
I’ve always dug this band. I’m a huge rock fan and although probably considered a Punk album this is just dripping with all the sleaze of a good rock song. The organ really knocks it out of the park. It has that element of danger that all Rock should.

11. Midnight – You Can’t Stop Steel
Midnight are from my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. We’ve played with them a bunch. They are one of the few good bands that have ever come out of Cleveland in my opinion. This is off the last record they put out called Satanic Royalty. I always liked the fact that they have always remained underground but still have a rabid fan base worldwide. They play by their own rules. It makes me wanna drink cheap beer and rip around on a motorcycle at unsafe speeds.

12. Mi Amore – Despampanante
I love this record called The Lamb but know little about the band. They are French Canadian I think. It’s kinda from a Hardcore subgenera of Metallic-Punk I don’t know much about. I got this record on a whim and have loved it for years. This album was recorded with Kurt Ballou who did our newest record, so it sounds great. It’s really violent and angst-y. I dig it.

13. Kiss – 100000 Years
If you don’t like this first Kiss album you don’t like Rock n Roll. It’s a fucking classic album and it has the “I dont give a fuck” attitude the whole way through. I appreciate a band that, although not musical virtuosos, wrote better songs that most of their contemporaries.

14. Kampfar – Dodens Vee
A Norwegian Black Metal band that I love. They kind of have this primitivism in the riffs that really makes it stand out all while keeping melodic and catchy. Very unique take on Black Metal. It has a Pagan sort of vibe with out being some dumb dress up in kilts and wear viking helmet bullshit gimmick. Their drummer tech’ed for us and Aura Noir on a tour. Awesome dude; awesome band.

15. Hellacopters – Hopeless Case of a kid in Denial
I love everything this band ever put out so it was hard to choose one song. It’s interesting that the metal and also the rock from Scandinavia is so fucking top notch. They are like the ultimate American rock band but they are from Sweden. I think Nicke Andersson (of Entombed fame, mind you) just sat in a room and studied Cheap Trick and Kiss records his entire youth or something. Never got to see them. He fronts a new band called Imperial State Electric that is worth a listen if you are a Hellacopters fan.

16. Gorgoroth – Carving a Giant
In my opinion this is the the best song off the best Gorgoroth record. It was the last one they did with Ghaal. Its called Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam. While the new Gorgoroth without Ghall is good, it is not THIS good. This is filthy black metal at its best. These guys looked the part, acted the part and put out the albums to back it up. I love all of it.

17. Nifelheim – Open the Gates to Damnation
Once again with the filthy black metal. This style of Black Metal is my bread and butter. The entire package you get with Nifelheim is amazing. This is also awesome because it so anti the current world of metal. They might not play as cleanly or “shred” as hard as a “modern metal” band but they are 1000 percent cooler by far. This is off a record called Envoy of Lucifer.

18. Inepsy – Who’s Next
When all my buddies were listening to Metallica and Pantera I was listening to bands like this. I just grew up on Punk so I have a soft spot for shit like this. I got into Metal later trough Punk. Inepsy is a Canadian band that unfortunately broke up recently. They have three full lengths. It’s got a Motorhead vibe for sure. Put on your leather and hang out by a brick wall or something while you listen to this track.

19. Dissection- Beyond the Horizon
So Dissection put out some killer albums then the front man turned out to actually be a killer and went to prison. When he got out he released the album this track is off of, Reinkaos. I think this album is often over looked as a legit Dissection release maybe because it’s so glossy in comparison. I happen to think its great. It has a cool rhythmic Black Metal-Rock vibe. I would have loved to see what else these guys put out had the frontman not killed himself.

20. Mutilation Rites – Blood Will Tell
These guys are a newer American Black Metal band from NYC. They are doing some killer and legit stuff. I am a big fan. They also smell kinda bad in person.

The Southwest Terror Fest is almost upon us, and today we’re getting you ready for it with a killer mixtape from Los Angeles’ infamous ACxDC. Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXXIV ACxDC was curated by Sergio Amalfitano and it’s an A to Z of what you need to listen to!

I’ve been going to shows since about 98-99. Ever since I started going I’ve been collecting vinyl and taking in as many shows as I could within my means. It’s a little bit difficult coming up with a mixtape when I just want to share my entire music library from the last 15 years of gathering music. Hell half the music I have isn’t on a computer. So I narrowed it down to some stuff I think either are basics everyone into extreme music should know or are overlooked gems that might not see too much exposure. Its an eclectic mix of grind, sludge, hardcore, thrash, d-beat, powerviolence, etc. Some of it’s old, some of it’s new. Either way this gives you a pretty decent incite into what I’m into. Its what happens when you grow in a scene like LA.

Today CVLT Nation is bringing you another mixtape for your mind…Sonic Cathedrals Vol CXXVI by OWLFOOD! Check out this mix of eclectic tunes below and enjoy!

This can be a difficult process. Picking sounds that mean the most to you and the music you create. Turns out it was illuminating and enjoyable.

Huge thanks to Sean and CVLT NATION for all the support and asking for us to make this mix tape.

Owlfood as a project is most satisfying because of our individual eclectic taste as music fans. We’ve been friends forever and we innately understand how each others’ tastes filters its way into our music. This mix tape is an example of what we might listen to on a more constant basis, essentially guitar based music. But our listening definitely enters the realms of jazz, electronic music, minimalism, noise, field recordings… it’s a constant adapting sound, vibrating forever and ever and ever…

Sonic Cathedrals Vol CXXVI OWLFOOD Track List:

Neil Young Dead Man soundtrack – Space, Saturation, Time, Melody, Tone. The ultimate.

Flying Canyon – The Bull Who Knew the Ring – SF doom folk. Heavy song. Heavy story. Look them up.

Barn Owl – Into the Red Horizon – Off the Conjurer EP. I saw them on tour around this time. Two guitars at very loud volume locked in with overtones and vibrations simulating pure human ecstasy. I pity those who never experience such joy in life.

Nico – Frozen Warnings – Very few can touch a nerve through such simple means. Voice and Harmonium. Her life story only adds more to the melancholy. Inspiring beauty.

Lungfish – You Are The War – The only band that matters. Live, a force of nature, recordings bring continuous joy and revelation. I hope one day they resume their illustrious path.

Abilene – FItch – “Two Guns, Twin Arrows” is a criminally overlooked record. Alex Dunham was in Hoover, Regulator Watts and others. His guitar playing has such amazing feel. Gentle touch when needed but he can dig and wail when the song calls for it.

Swans – Eden Prison, chugging along, claustrophobic emotions, black smoke, led to destruction by Mr. Michael Gira

The Stooges – Dirt – Bass line of all bass lines, Iggy’s ramble in and out of the fire. I love when they travelled this more psychedelic path.

Alaric – Weep – Really amazing Death punk. Atmosphere for days, driving drums, brilliant vocals. I feel as if I could have found this on a cassette tape in one of my weirdo friends’ car circa 86′ and I would have loved it So original.

DrCarlsonAlbion – Reynardine (Traditional) – More guitar mastery from Earth’s founding member Dylan Carlson, this track has the addition of vocals. FEMALE vocals no doubt. Culminating in absolute sorcery. Maybe its the use of tremolo, but this one leaves me aching after every listen.

Cabaret Voltaire – Fourth Shot – I wanna go back in time and see this live in a warehouse in Sheffield, UK. dark, surreal, unnatural, steel and concrete.

Rites of Spring – Nudes – ROS are of my favorite bands of all time for too many reasons to get into here. They seemed to still soar above those from this time. They represent a feeling I’ll never feel again with another band. Its not nostalgia but the discovery of a pure moment unconcerned with anything but being alive, at that moment.

Young Widows – The Muted Man – Never really got into the early material, but this record is pretty flawless. Semi-abstract rock guitar song writing, great recording and vocals effects and atmosphere, I listen to this record a lot.

Jerk with a bomb – Raging Bulls – Weird name for a band. The dude from Black Mountain. He can write the fuck out of some songs. This is one of my favorites.

Iceage – Burning Hand – Punk isn’t dead not by a long shot, it might just be a young man’s game.

Wire – Mercy – Angular, brooding, and the beginning of something new in the splintering of punk

The Conet Project – Mystery, numbers, and shortwave radio

Human Bell – Trail of Tears, First track of Nathan’s I’ve ever heard its off a self-released CDR -blissed out psych banjo and baritone guitar.

Chrome – Read Only Memory – In the early 90′s I was bored and would go to Goth Night at a local dance club. I met a girl who was also the bartender. She turned me on to tons things. We would listen to records in her tiny apartment without any furniture. Through her I discovered Chrome.

Angels of Light -Kosinski – Michael Gira’s second appearance in this mix, but his mesmerizing voice and the song’s repetitious ability to revel more and more light until I’m blinded in its glory is just perfect.

Talk Talk – Runeii – I obsessed over this record in the 2000 after I read a Tape Op interview with the engineer Tim Brown. Apparently they recorded weeks on end with oil lamp projections playing same riff over and over and obsessing over microphones. They once changed the direction of the oil lamps and everyone felt like they had gone insane. I’m a nerd for recording myths and this one has many. Great textures, amazing record in its proper context.

Grouper – Follow In Our Dreams – Drenched in reverb and buried guitar. Voyeuristic sounds that reach the surface, between two abandoned buildings.

Canyon – Yellow tape – Heavy as fuck. Not in volume or riffs, but in convincing emotions. Listen to the lyrics. Melancholy at its finest. I listened to this song on repeat one summer. “One night death he came knocking, I let him in, he’s an old friend of a friend”

Zomes – Openings – The mind of Asa Osbourne must share similar matter with mine. Voices of the divine – His guitar and song writing in Lungfish, Pupils, have left permanent marks, his visual art, and solo project Zomes are equally inspiring.

Time-Ship of the Demogorgon – Daniel (Arcus Incus Ululat) Higgs, Interdimensional Song-Seamstress – Do not read my words. Listen.

Neil Young – Dead Man Soundtrack – Closing of the eye.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXXVIV by MORNE

Check out Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXXVIV by MORNE below!

Mix tapes have always been the most engaging, most personal, and the most dependable gateway to new music for me. Even in 2013 when pretty much any song or band I could ever want to hear is readily available on Youtube or blogs, I still consistently discover my new favorite music through exchanging tapes with friends. It may seem archaic and maybe even pointless to a lot of people, but there is something about the craft and the ritual surrounding it that makes the mix tape such a unique way of experiencing music. Just the fact that there is any sort of actual effort involved in creating a mix tape illustrates a sincere appreciation and value for the music contained therein. A rarity, for sure, especially in a time where music has become so disposable and mindlessly consumed.

When Sean approached us about curating a tape for CVLT Nation, I was very excited to have the opportunity to contribute something like this to such an esteemed website. I did my best to compile songs that I feel fit the vibe of Morne but also to highlight some of my personal influences over the past few years. This is not a showcase of ultra-obscure rarities, it’s simply a mix of my current music obsessions, heavy hitter classics as well as some tracks by friends whose work I admire. Though it may lack the tangible/personal touch of an actual cassette, I hope you enjoy the listening experience.

Cheers,
- Max/Morne, October 2013

“The Minutes Felt Like Hours” was recorded in one take 11/9/2013 Produced by J. Randall for the ANbRx Pharmaceuticals group llc. Because of its length (over 11.5 hours) the file size for this recording was just too large to master and as result is relatively quiet, please adjust the volume on your system audio player as needed. This recording was inspired by the shifting visual geometry and time. distortion one can experience from smoking N,N-Dimethyltryptamine.

CVLT Nation Interviews: Merdarahta + Track Premiere

Merdarahta is the experimental alter-ego of Ottawa grindmongers Fuck the Facts. With new release breathe electric out this Tuesday (17 December 2013), project leader and FTF guitarist Topon Das talks about his longstanding interest in the experimental/noise genre and the process-based approach of improvisational music.

"M-Fuzz"

Merdarahta – “Breathe II” – A Cvlt Nation exclusive track premiere:

As a Canadian veteran of the extreme music scene, it’s an understatement to say that Das is driven; in a country where the average distance between major cities is ridiculous, it takes determination and vision to maintain a band and tour regularly. Merdarahta may be a reflection of the mindset required to ensure that one’s creative efforts have persisted across vast distances and over more than a decade: sounds develop gradually, moving in and out of the listener’s attention, subtly shifting from point to point with a sense of continual focused movement, like a glacier slowly grinding across a stony landscape. It’s an interesting counterpoint to Fuck The Facts’ multifaceted style of grind (which is equally kinetic but capricious: the landscape can change at a moment’s notice); Merdarahta draws instead on Das’s interest in noise aesthetics, creating a progression of tonal layers in a more open, atmospheric sense of time.

You’ve been a noise fan for quite some time already, what do you like about it? How did you discover the genre? Any favourite artists or recordings?

I got into noise when I first started tape trading in the 90’s. Grindcore and noise were (and I guess still are) very intertwined, so I would get a lot of noise tapes and was always discovering different noise projects. The same reasons I was motivated to play grind are the reasons I wanted to play noise. It was new to me and I related to it right away. I’ve always loved raw aggressive music, but I also love experimental music. Putting these 2 things together is what really makes music fun for me. Some of the first straight up noise projects I got into were Napalmed, Namanx, Masonna & of course Merzbow, but also hearing grind bands like Brutal Truth & Exit-13 have noise on their albums helped put it all together for me. The extreme harshness of Masonna’s “Inner Mind Mystique” album grabbed me right away is probably still my favorite straight-up noise release.

Montreal has a vibrant scene for noise and experimental music (i.e. Alien8 Recordings); how does Ottawa compare?

Ottawa in general has an amazing music scene and I don’t think it’s any different when it comes to more experimental music. Projects like Kingdom Shore are really helping to keep things interesting in the region.

According to the project’s Facebook page, merdarahta is “The act of covering a corpse in the excrement of their master, to provide safe passage into the afterlife” – in other words, transcendence/transformation through defilement. How did you choose the name?

The name itself is taken from a Fuck The Facts song off of our split with Feeble Minded. It’s an ambient noise track,  so it came to mind right away when this project started to come together. Four fifths of FTF is involved in Merdarahta and when we got this material together we decided that it would be better to put it under a different name. Even though it’s a different project I wanted it to be connected. I’ve dedicated a pretty huge part of my life to Fuck The Facts, so for me it made more sense to make this project just a different branch off the FTF tree.

FTF is recognized not only for its music but also for the band’s work ethic and DIY approach – for over a decade, you’ve been touring constantly and you release material on a regular basis (and the last four EPs were independent productions) – but Merdarahta is a relatively new project; could it have existed, say, five years ago?

I don’t think I would have been ready to do it 5 years ago, and even now doing something outside of Fuck The Facts is a bit strange and difficult for me. I created FTF as a project where anything goes, but over time I feel like we’ve come into our own sound and even though we’re still always experimenting with new things, there is a sort of “Fuck The Facts” way of doing things now. To do something outside of FTF it had to be very different and it’s definitely more recently that I’m more comfortable with exploring territory outside of my main band.

Previous Merdarahta recordings definitely had a sense of immediacy, even urgency,  and their development was very organic in comparison to the more angular attacks of FTF songs; since Merdarahta’s inception in 2012, how has working on this project affected your approach to songwriting for FTF?

The first Merdarahta release was actually in 2011. The whole thing started when we were doing the Fuck The Facts album Die Miserable. There’s a bonus track called “Oct 26”, and this is the first blueprint for what would become Merdarahta. As for how it’s affected my work with FTF, I don’t think it really has or at least not more than any sort of normal development. The projects are very different and really that’s the point. The reason Merdarahta is separate from FTF is because it is its own creature.

The creative process behind this project is essentially improv-based and you’ve described it in a previous interview as, “an unbroken flow of ideas and sense of simply being submerged in the moment.” You mentioned that making noise is something you enjoy doing in your spare time, and Merdarahta recordings have a darkly psychedelic sort of ambience; can sound-making like this be considered a form of meditation?

Totally. When I’m working on Merdarahta tracks or just making noise for fun, I’m using a very different music muscle than what I normally do with FTF. I’m not sitting down and writing out parts, demoing it and slowly putting together a song. It’s all about hitting record and seeing what comes out. What I play on guitar is never predetermined, and the way I manipulate the effects are done in a way that I’m trying to create an atmosphere, but also keep things moving. Since I never really know what’s going to come out and working with a different chain of pedals can produce different results, I’m definitely kept on my toes while also striving for a natural overall ambience that sounds seamless.

The track “Breathe”, from the 2012 release Fault of Air/Breathe, is particularly cinematic – it reminded me of Neil Young’s evocative soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Dead Man, which conjures the vast landscapes of North America in a similar fashion as the music of Montreal’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Is this a Canadian thing, the expression/awareness of vastness?

That’s one of my favorite tracks as well and I think a great example of just a constant flow of ideas that comes together really well. It’s definitely not perfect and you can hear some minor imperfections, but that’s kind of the idea. I don’t know if it’s Canadian thing, perhaps having all the space that we have has led to some unconscious desire to spread out.

How is this latest recording different from the earlier releases?

This new release is very similar to the first two in sound and even visually, but I do have future Merdarahta releases in the works that head into some different territory. The main difference on the new release is that there’s a different collaborator. For each release we’ve added someone different to the mix. For “Snake Charmer / Towers” it was Leigh from The Sun Through A Telescope, then on “Fault Of Air / Breathe” we added Seb from Mekhaya and now on “Breathe Electric” we added Mike from Black Oak Decline. Collaboration with different people is a pretty crucial part of these Merdarahta recordings and I definitely have plans to have more people involved in future releases as well.

How did you decide on James Plotkin for mastering?

I had handled the recording, mixing and mastering on the previous releases, but I knew I wanted to get someone else’s ears involved with this new one. I think James did a great job on the mastering, really making it sound big without affecting the dynamics of the tracks. I’ve been a big fan of a lot of his work, especially with his band O.L.D., so it was awesome to get to work with him on this.

Let’s talk a bit about Apartment 2 Recording, the studio you established in 2010. Has recording other bands affected your own work (e.g. songwriting, mixing, work ethic, motivation, etc.)? Favourite project/s so far?

It affects my own work mainly in the way that I don’t have as much time for it. I really love doing the studio work and working with so many different bands, but sometimes it can be tough to have to sideline some of my own projects because I have to record another band. It’s the reality of playing underground music I guess; I make more money working on other people’s music than my own. Sometimes I have to give priority to the folks that are actually paying my bills, but I do my best to try and balance it with my own projects and set aside time to get what I need to do done. In general, it is really cool that I get to spend so much time in the studio and gain a lot of knowledge that I can bring into my own band and projects. I’ve recorded Biipiigwan and Alaskan since day one, and I’ve done all of their releases. These are two great bands and it really means a lot to me that they’ve trusted me with their music for so long.

With regular studio projects on the go and a young child at home, will you be touring any less often?

This year is actually the most touring we’ve done since 2008, not that it’s a crazy amount. Over the years we’ve sort of leveled out and we do about 70 shows a year. I don’t think I’ll stop touring anytime soon and the amount we do now really lets me balance the road with home and work. There are sacrifices being made in all aspects of my life, so I can do it all, but really I would never complain. I’m able to head to Europe for a few weeks on tour, come back and work in the studio and then go home and play with my kid. I can’t think of a better life.

Can you talk about your noise playlist a bit, e.g. why you chose these particular tracks and what their significance is for you. If the playlist is sequenced in a specific order, why?

No specific order. The tracks are ones I first discovered (Masonna, Namanax, Merzbow, Tribes of Neurot, Trial of the Bow), others from friends I used to trade tapes with (Napalmed, Insomnia), a couple artists Fuck The Facts did noise splits with (Ames Sanglantes, Fever Spore) and a new noise friend, Orange Annihilator, that I recently did a split with.

TOPON DAS NOISE PLAY LIST:

Trial of the Bow – Alizee:  http://youtu.be/-AYd9-UUEFY

Like the name implies, “breathe II” is a continuation of breathe I (from fault of air/breathe). Some left over ideas and recordings that didn’t fit with the first song. Unlike the first one, breathe II is more of a constant build up. The mood is set and over the progression of the track is constant until it dies out.

The new Merdarahta album breathe electric is out Tuesday, via Bandcamp here.

My CVLT Nation Mixtape. It’s a simple format of classics and some under-rated gems. I chose multiple songs by the same artist as that’s how I made tapes in the “pre-ipod” world of walkman’s and tape decks. WAKE is touring the west coast in February. We hope to see some old friends and hopefully make some new ones. Come out and GRIND.
