Tonight our favorite Vancouver promoters of everything heavy, Nothing is Heavy, celebrate their 1-year anniversary with a fucking wicked show at The Rickshaw in Vancouver, featuring Black Wizard‘s album release for Young Wisdom and special guests Tobeatic, Hoopsnake & Wiser Fool. To celebrate, Chris Dyck from Nothing is Heavy and Anciients has put together a crushing mix of death, black and thrash metal for you to get hyped up to! So hit play below and get your pre-game on for tonight’s show!

Craft – Demonspeed..from Fuck the Universe
This has to be my fave black metal album of all time…so fucking rockin, so ripped…best riffs, best drumming…every fucking song on this record crushes…one of the best overall DIY metal records ever…so badass…fucking full speed ahead!!!

Entombed – Left Hand Path…from Left Hand Path
I’m 36, so this album was one of the first death metal albums I had ever heard and one of the first ones I ever owned…every current throwback death metal band tries to sound like this and I’m not complaining at all…again an example of killer riffs, rockin drums and ripped vocals…you guys seeing a trend here?…haha…For those just getting into death metal, there are far more important albums you need to check out since this is pretty much a Slayer/rock album…but no one was doing this kinda metal when it came out and no one has done it better since…these guys also really were one of say 3 or 4 Swedish bands (Carnage, Dismember, Unleashed, Grave etc) that moulded the death metal scene over there…fucking classic.

980509_10100631555120481_925146336_o

Yob – Prepare the Ground…from Atma
I have only recently in the past year or so gotten into Yob…this shit is insane…Chris Bruni at Profound Lore puts out some crazy albums and this one is no exception…mind shatteringly crushing…tons of emotion…Mike’s guitar playing is so wicked and is only secondary in overall wickedness to his supreme vocals…currently this album is my jam…had the pleasure of booking Yob’s first Vancouver show recently…amazing show…and amazing people…have become good friends with Aaron and Mike…best.

Mayhem – Chimera (full album)
I play in Anciients…we recently put out our debut on Season of Mist…personally this stokes me to no end…like, dude, my band is on the same label as fucking Mayhem!!!…dude…people can shit talk all they want about member changes and other horse shit, at the end of the day these guys were the craziest, sickest, weirdest dudes ever…and…they still kinda are…Like each album is fucked up and weird and what “black metal” should be…unsafe, dangerous, mysterious, and nauseating as all fuck…I love the swirling, unstable, fucked up way they do pretty much everything…Maniac’s vocals on this record are sick…I have been diggin this one a lot lately, kind of a revisit…the production is actually really good and it’s a bit more straight forward and thrashy…well, haha…as straight forward as Mayhem gets anyway…which is still suuuper fuuuucked up by most bands standards…Long live fucking Mayhem, the true fathers of Norwegian black metal…could give a flying fuck if you don’t agree…you weren’t there anyways brah.

Autopsy – Dead…from Mental Funeral
My fave Autopsy song from my fave Autopsy album…possibly the world’s heaviest song…seriously…4 lines of lyrics…all that is required…such sick detuned harmonies…ahhh…so raaad!!!…Also, I have 2 copies of this on slime green vinyl…had them since grade 11…like I said…I’m hella old.

Celtic Frost – Necromantical Screams…from To Mega Therion
my fave metal band ever…that is all…tom g warrior is god…everyone from high on fire to obituary owes.

Bolt Thrower- Unleashed Upon Makind…from Warmaster
Another no comment needed song/album/band…I know these guys are the fuckin darlings of the hipstery doomy hardcore whatever thing that’s going on now (which is weird to me and boggles my mind) and everyone has listened to them since forever (sure, youre fucking 23)…but…it’s totally justified (now that I think about it), for me, these guys were the heaviest band around when I first heard them…simple…punk as fuck…crushing…best riffs…horrible drumming!!!…haha…Seriously though, this is their best record and one of the raddest tunes from this album…the original war metal yo…oh, and Joe Bench is in the band, so they win by default.

Ministry – Hero…from Psalm 69
First heavy show I went to was Ministry for this tour…with Helmet and Sepultura opening…blew my feeble 15 year old brain…I dont listen to a ton of industrial music…like none really…but for me this is the best one in the genre…perfect mix of creepy growly vocals…ice cold buzzsaw riffing…lurching pulsing drums…like I said, I saw this live and it was no fucking canned music…this band was on fucking fire…3 guitars, 2 drummers…retarded…so boss.

Sepultura – Dead Embryonic Cells…from Arise
First heavy tape I had…set the tone for everything else heavy I ever got into…it really opened some doors for me…was really fast and heavy but I could still wrap my mind around it…total stepping stone in terms of what my brain could handle at the time…haha…this song is wicked…trippy riffs…total classic Sepultura tune…another amazing band I had the chance to see several times back in the day…like early 90′s…ruled.

Black Sabbath- Wheels of Confusion…from Vol 4
Fucking duh.

Suffocation – Devoid of Truth…from Despise the Sun
I always thought that this recording was their best…wish it wouldve been a full album…the Steve Heritage recording here is rad…every song is a winner…probably my all time favorite death metal band…I think in terms of punishing, heavy breakdown-y, double kicky death metal no one can touch Suffocation…like Frank’s vocals alone knock you on your ass…this band was/is a killing machine…please enjoy.

Assuck- Salt Mine…from Misery Index
Another band I see written across people’s chests all the time now…like where the fuck are they getting these shirts?…Are they making them at home?…fuck…it’s cool, mind you, to see kids doing their homework and checking out bands like Assuck…these guys pretty much perfected political grind…unreal band live also…I saw them in a church in East Van with Reversal of Man…stupid good show…the total good old days…this record rules…mind you I prefer Anti Capital, I cant find the Anti Capital (weak) cd so I’m listening to this one now…haha…check Rob’s drumming…bloody ridiculous.

Decapitated – Homo Sum…from Carnival is Forever
Just finished a month of touring with these guys…listened to this every night live and every day in the van…best people ever…really miss them…can’t wait to see them again…fuck yes Poland…currently these guys are one of the best death metal bands on earth…not open for debate.

Lamb of God – Desolation…from Resolution
Same deal…just finished a month of touring with LOG…wasn’t really all that familiar with their music and or whatever…I knew they were a huge band and they played a kinda Slayer-y/Pantera-ish type metal…well…they fucking decimate…holy shit…every night…killing it…very intelligent, chill nice dudes…had a blast…Was an honour to open for them each night and will do it again in a second…this new record by them is pretty fuckin thrashy and cool…I prefer LOG live fur shuur but…this will do…again, live they will give ANY metal band a run for their money…fucking sick band, even if it’s not fully my vibe.

Sadistic Intent- Return to the Eve (Celtic Frost cover)…from In Memory of Celtic Frost
Check out this album of Celtic Frost covers…there are a few good ones…but…this one is kiiiiilllllerrrr!!!…Been coming back to this jam over and over for years…Sadistic Intent was/is a totally underated band…super evil and super cool…check it…the vocals, so rad.

Dissection- Nights Blood…from Storm of the Lights Bane
Near perfect metal song from a near perfect album…if you haven’t heard the first 2 Dissection albums, do yourself a huge favor…so frostbitten and grim!!!…Like Ride the Lightning era Metallica playing black metal…but not stock as fuck like later Immortal…you’ll see.

Death – Together as One…from Human
Just did a 3 weeks tour with DTA (Death to All) the Cynic/Human lineup of Death with a guest vocalist…what a great tribute to Chuck…We had a blast and getting to see Paul, Sean and Steve rule this song and all the other Human songs, plus pre-Human era hits, was something I will never, ever forget…This album changed my way of thinking about music…it’s another near perfect album and this track is my fave…tough to pick one, but I think this is it…Sean’s drumming is out of this world and at the time was leaps and bounds beyond what anyone else was even thinking of doing…and he was fucking 19…It was a true privalege to meet and tour with these guys…amazing people…for me, one of the higlights of my metal life…if you do not own this album please, please download it ASAP…it’s like the Steely Dan of metal…so fuckin smooth.

Immolation – I feel nothing
So fucking heavy…God damn these dudes are trippy…saw them on this tour…super interesting band…very unique…true death metal…enjoy the blasphemy.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CVI Curated by LYCIA Track List

1. Ralph Stanley – O Death
This track is haunting. My family is from West Virginia and I grew up listening to bluegrass music. This man’s voice embodies real emotion in music.

2. Black Mare – Blind One
I just recently discovered Sera Timms’ work and have listened to this obsessively since.

3. Joy Division – 24 hours
Influencing everything.

4. White Lies – E.S.T.
I found this band on Pandora about six months ago and fell in love. Now I listen to them daily.

5. Sailors with Wax Wings – There came a drooping maid with violets
I love this song and this album. Reminds me of dreams.

6. Trance to the Sun – The Nun V.V.
Lycia toured with this band in 1995 and I have been a huge fan ever since. To this day I sing this song as I’m going about my day.

7. Godflesh – Like Rats
Fucking genius. Makes me want to bite things.

8. Willie Nelson – Angel flying too close to the ground
Beautifully sad. Reminds me of childhood.

9. Killing Joke – Requiem
They’re Killing Joke. Big early influence on Lycia. Nothing else needs to be said.

10. Psychedelic Furs – Sister Europe
Another early Lycia influence. The first two albums.

11. Swans – Blood Promise
I could put every single Swans song on this list. I added this one because it’s the one that struck me today.

12. Clan of Xymox – Back Door
Another influence on Lycia. The whole Medusa album is brilliant.

13. Dead Can Dance – A Passage in Time
This band speaks for itself.

14. Fever Ray – If I had a heart
Awesome song. And because I am obsessed with Vikings.

15. Die Antwoord – I fink u freeky
I just like this song. Fuck you.

16. Bauhaus – Stigmata Martyr
Because it’s Bauhaus

17. Al Bowlly – Midnight, and the stars, and you
The Shining is my favorite movie. This song never leaves my brain.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol CVII Curated by Lesbian Track List

Coroner- Masked Jackyl
The best Progressive metal Band Period. An amazing metal trio, heavy yet intricate with virtuoso guitar solos over multiple rhythm changes. Masked Jackyl has our favorite riffs. This song is never gets old and this band is a huge influence.

Obituary – I’m in pain
It’s hard to discern exactly why, but this is one of the best songs ever. It probably has something to do with that killer drum break. We writing thrashier shit these days and this track certainly is an influence on that. Fucking rules.

Emperor – An Elegy of Icarus
This is one of Emperor’s best songs. Its beginning is almost ballad like and then it’s onto the fast and heavy. Emperor rule and Ishahn is the best at singing while shredding amazing solos.

Agitation Free – We are Men
These guys are one of the lesser known krautrock bands from the early 70′s. Sometimes they sound like Amon Duul II meets Steely Dan and that’s a recipe for awesome.

Mahavishnu Orchestra – Meeting of the Spirits
From Their debut album The Inner Mounting flame. This shit is heavy! To this day it’s an album that is like no other. The 1st song on the album has all the hooks and amazing musicianship. It mixed jazz and rock like nobody else has since. Billy Cobham’s double bass drumming gave it a pre-metal feel and nobody plays like John Mcglaughlin. A must for any musician.

Swarming Hordes – Our Queen, Bring Forth Thine Nectar
This is one of the greatest bands of all time, no bullshit. They are like a sped up instrumental Metalica without any suck. Best live band ever.

Apes of Wrath – Neitzsche Doll
Apes was for us our introduction to Brad Mowen, who sings the Fate shit on Forestelevision. Brad’s a true spirit warrior and master of his art, whether the king, lemmy, punk, or operatic, and everything in between, the man can do it all…and the rest of this band is comprised of local rippers as well. Seeing these dudes live in Olympia back in the day was one of the best things I’ve ever fuckin’ seen. Vocal pedals, jazz/grind drumming, pummeling bass, and fucked up guitar riffing from a true eccentric named ‘Bob’. If you’re a fan of sick shit, this should just speak for itself. Get a piece of Seattle old skool bitches. Dan has plenty copies lying around, I’m sure if you send him a ‘s.a.s.e.’ and 5 bucks he’ll hit the post office asap.

Monster Magnet-Black Mastermind
These guys capture the apathy of grunge in the best way. They don’t give two shits. “Wanna Fuck?” “Wanna Fuck!!?”

Far East Family Band-Nipponjin
We like to crank this one on the way to shows and sing “So Fucking High” to the melody of the chorus. Try it, it’s fun as hell. Plus, this track is almost 40 minutes long and you know that’s how we roll.

Gorguts – Inverted
Gorguts are the fucking KINGS of death metal over here, some of the sickest all-around shit EVER! I’m still considering getting ‘From Wisdom to Hate’ tattooed across my stomach! You can’t fuck with those fucked up guitars and time signatures and torn vocals! The way it flips the beat at times, especially jiving at 2:25, soloing from hell, the torture and grace, so much passion and fluidity! The vocal styling’s of Luc and Steeve are a major influence on what I attempt to convey with my own voice, fuck all the other stupid shit, long live Gorguts, and RIP BIG STEEVE!

Tad – Wood Goblins
It’s TAD! Wood?! Goblins?!! Sign me the fuck up! Tad is an icon of my early youth years in the northwest, and yet Seattle seemed so far away from where I was growing up at the time, even if it was relatively close! Bottom line: TAD is RAD!! Maybe if you’re fuckin’ high as fuck this is some shit you’d see! Wooood! Gobbbbblinzz!! This shit means business the second it kicks in, driving bass, nasty feedback, hallucinatory invocations?! Turn up excessively loud to please your parents immediately!!

Carcass – Forensic Clinicism/The Sanguine Article
This “CUT” off of one Carcass’ finest albums totally grooves, something as a bass player I completely appreciate. I love the rhythmic and harmonic interplay, the soundtrack to cutting up corpses has never been so epic! People sometimes ask how we can remember a 44 minute song; I wanna know how Jeff Walker can have these fucked up big medical dictionary lyrics engrained in his mind?! A bit insane perhaps?! When your fragile life ends, we will be there to eat you! Totally classic!

Into Eternity – Splintered Visions
Some people find these dudes corny, I don’t get it…it’s technically proficient, heavy as fuck, and in my mind unfuckwithable. This album was with me at a particularly darker time in my life, and I can’t help but find this shit melancholic but uplifting and positive at the same time. One thing I love about heavy music, when people ask “how does that blah be de blah shit cheer you up?” I dunno, it just DOES! The opening line..”dedicate the mind…” sets it all up, I feel like these dudes are kindred meditative spirits when it comes to composing blistering and flowing epics.

Harvey Milk- This, to my ears, captures the essence of blues. Dark and strained lyrical content, languished vocals, modal guitar work, all of it. When things get heavy, it is absolutely raw and crushing; and the guitar solo/lead is beyond emotive. This song destroys me every single time. Probably my favorite Harvey Milk song.

Brutal Truth- This band has to be a “perfect band” for their respective style and methods. Need To Control is also a “perfect album” for the genre….which is Brutal Truth’s alone. They inhabit their own realm of grind, mixed with churning dirge, mixed with sleazy 70′s esque BIG rock riffing, all inflected/injected with an experimental/harsh noise flair. One of the best albums of the 90′s for me. Total classic. This song exemplifies why this record is so great. The off the chain drumming of Rich Hoak, brutally concise bass playing of Dan Lilker, meandering, hammering noodling of “Gurn” Mc Carty, and the completely unleashed vokills of Kevin Sharp combine to produce metal magick. Love this record! This song is an obvious standout, and for good reason!

Judas Priest – This record, from the guitar tones to the riffs, vocal delivery…the whole package is classic. But, this being the title track, captures the essence of the record, and this band at this time in their career, perfectly. The lyrical message is deep in its content and Halford’s phrasing can’t be beat. This song exemplifies the heavy, rocking, lyrical nature of 70′s era Priest. Absolutely Impeccable!

Destruction – Rippin’ you off blind
The is one of the best tracks off of one of Destruction’s most awesome albums, which also features the best cover of My Sharona EVER!! The intro is fantastic and groovy so when it kicks in with some serious fuckin’ speed, it creates a good rush of adrenaline that will command your head to bang immediately, a very effective maneuver musically indeed! Also, the guitar solos on this fucker are amazing, especially at the 4:40 mark when it breaks down, I could listen to that line over and over again…which reminds me somewhat of something we might do, a nice un-repeated touch to keep you coming back for more…in addition, a song about gettin’ ripped off, most definitely begs repeats listens, as NOBODY likes when that happens, and it’s good to be reminded of from time to time!

Ahab – Father Sea
Some of the best funeral doom around. They mix clean guitar passages with heavy brooding guitars beautifully. The Vocals are done in a very similar fashion. This is a great song form a sick band.

Morbid Angel – I have friends who regard Formulas Fatal to the Flesh as a musicians record. It rocks, but it’s also fucking weird and highly technical. At times, it can be disorienting. This track stands out because it encapsulates both the bands lyrical mythology, mythos if you will, and also the varied technical mastery they display time and time again. It definitely displays the varied/various, and sometimes subtle, stylistic touch points Morbid Angel employ in their music in that it fucking grinds, but also tickles the ears with its progressive flair. Another thing this song also does is fucking ROCK, especially the slow building reprise towards the end, which, when it breaks into the gallop, can’t help but elicit an appreciative headbang every single time I hear it.

Sleep – This song is a force unto itself…brooding, plodding, and INSANELY heavy. My favorite track from Holy Mountain for sure. It really hammers home the beauty and surface “simplicity” of their seemingly stripped down rock dirge. So much more bubbling under the surface though….let your stoned ears do the work while you check out and have your mind obliterated. Sleep is by far one of our favorite bands EVER, and Matt Pike is definitely a musical hero. His live presentation can sometimes be a bit messy, in a Jimmy Page kind of way, but the guy can shred some fucking riffs. The song, for me, contains the most crushing riffery of the whole record-hands down. There’s space, and then there’s space…..and these guys understand and traverse both.
Yes-Heart of the Sunrise. Yes were composing music in the 70′s that had complex time signatures, strange keys and long winded time frames. We are definitely influenced by this groundbreaking band. They also get major points for wearing bedazzled capes! Heart of the Sunrise is a classic yes song with all the flair that makes them one of the best progressive rock bands ever! Especially the guitar and bass interplay. The artwork by Roger Dean is also a big influence!

High on Fire – Blood from Zion
Pike and Co. at their most pure and raw! The plod and groove of this song are a stoners wet dream come true, turning the corner from Sleep into this up beat banging number is a harbinger of the future of this band! Massive respect, you’ll never hear any of these dudes sayin’ Sabbath wasn’t an influence!

CVLT Nation Death Metal Mixtape Series Premiere DEATH HAMMER Vol. 1

$

0

I was asked to make a death metal mixtape so I just put together a bunch of tracks I enjoy. Maybe you’ll like them too. Simple right?

These run the spectrum in sound and style within death metal I think, some old and some recent. Songs from bands that are well known like Ulcerate and Immolation, or others like Timeghoul and Led Astray never lived long enough to get their strong sounds out there. Then there’s old masters that many seem to have been forgotten like Iniquity, The Chasm, and Mithras, and the newcomers that have quite a few underground eyes on them such as Ignivomous, Ritual Necromancy, and Antediluvian.

You may be surprised that I did not include some classics like Bolt Thrower, Seance, Autopsy, Obituary, Dismember, etc. which is sure to draw some annoyance, and the same goes for leaving out groups like Defeated Sanity, Anata, Disgorge, Portal, Lykathea Aflame, etc. All of which I do enjoy I assure you but I couldn’t include everything.

Anyway I suggest you check out and buy the record that each of these are torn from in full. A full track list is right below. Enjoy.

CVLT Nation is happy to announce that Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CVIII Curated by TOMBS goes live today! Mike Hill from TOMBS has already curated one mixtape for us, so this is kind of a part II mix, full of eclectic sounds that will make your day! So sit back, hit play and enjoy!

CVLT NATION MIXTAPE July 2013

I really enjoy doing these mixtapes; it gives me a chance to set aside some time and go through my record collection, pull out tracks that sort of capture the moment and rediscover some jams that I haven’t listen to in a while. The east coast summer has descended on us like a hammer; the days are hot, unbearable and the nights are languid and filled with restlessness, so the first few tracks are songs that I always find myself gravitating to during this season.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CVIII Curated by TOMBS Track List

1. Danzig – Blood and Tears

Even though I love the hard-hitting cuts like “Am I Demon”, my favorites are when Danzig is crooning. Put this one on at 3 am when it’s too hot to sleep.

2. Roy Orbison – In Dreams

I first heard Roy Orbison when I was a kid, but it wasn’t until I saw David Lynch’s Blue Velvet that intensity of this song really set in.

3. Gun Club – Eternally is Here

I bought “Las Vegas Story” because I thought the name Gun Club sounded cool. This song reminds me of the summer after I graduated high school.

4. Alice in Chains – Would

I’m a latecomer to the Alice in Chains camp, but this is a really cool jam by a band that I never took seriously. If you’re a hater like I was, give it a chance and pay attention to the lyrics.

5. Cocteau Twins –Blind Dumb Deaf

This song reminds me of watching a girl get dressed in her bedroom

6. Circle of Ouroborus – A Root Casket

I can thank my brother Ralph Schmidt from Planks for turning me on to this band. This is one of my favorite tracks.

7. Godflesh – Dead Head

When I first heard “Streetcleaner” I didn’t know if I liked it or not. I didn’t have the proper wiring in my brain to decipher the vibrations that were erupting from my speakers. The record was both intensely brutal and frightening at the same time. This song pretty much covers it.

8. Gods and Queens – Untitled 5

I played in a band called Versoma with Jamie a few years back. Gods and Queens is what the band would have sounded like if I haven’t gotten in the way.

9. Buzzoven – Sore

This is the sound track for robbing a 7-11

10. Eyehategod – Jack Ass in the Will of God

This is the song that would be playing in the getaway car after John F Kennedy was assassinated by the Illuminati.

11. Outlaw Order – Double Barrel Solves Everything

What ever happened to this band? I wish that the Eyehategod dudes would focus on this band and let the past be the past.

12. Green River – Forever Means

Before Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney, there was Green River, in my opinion the best band to come out of that scene.

13. La Gritona – Carrion

Back in the mid-90’s there was a band called La Gritona that were maybe a few years ahead of their time. Tortuga Records put out a discography of their material a few years ago, if you can find it, I highly recommend picking it up. Think Black Flag and Rapeman genetically spliced with Unsane

14. Hammerhead – Double Negative

I would listen to this record late at night in my room and imagine that 100 years from now people would be analyzing the work of Hammerhead along side the work of Charles Mingus. If you dig this, I recommend checking out the band Vaz, which features the rhythm section of this band.

15. Green Magnet School – Package

GMS were one of the few east coast bands that Sub Pop put records out by. They were also on a shortlist of really cool Boston-based bands of early 90’s. It’s sort of a noise, industrial type of trip, but not really. You could tell that these guys listened to Swans, Throbbing Gristle and Cop Shoot Cop.

16. Coil – Things Happen

My favorite post-Throbbing Gristle band; in some ways, they are an evil Tangerine Dream: dark, vast, cinematic and creepy.

17. Nico – These Days

I went through a big Nico phase a few years ago. This is a song that I often play on Friday nights after training Jiu Jitsu.

CVLT Nation is happy to offer you a soundtrack for your week with Sonic Cathedrals Vol CIX Curated by Narrows going live today! This mixtape is a true group effort, with each member of the band choosing songs to create one whole epic fucking mix. Enjoy!

When this band got together I was very curious to see how it would come out. We all came from the same sort of background musically…kind of. Meaning we all have punk, hardcore and metal as the common thread but that wasn’t the only thing you’d find in our record collections. Somewhere close to that Acme record would also be an At the Gates record. Or Suede right next to Suicide. De La Soul next to Deadguy. You get the idea. But this is basically how Narrows sounds to me personally. We skip through genres from our collective back catalog to get to where we’re at now. Whether an idea is new or borrowed it certainly sounds nothing like its original concept when it’s eventually finished.

So when CVLT asked us to throw this guy together I was equally curious to see what the other boys would throw in. After spending endless hours in a shitty van I thought I had them pegged. A couple surprises but mostly I was on. But if you make it through most of this you’ll have a better understanding of who we are and where we coming from.

CVLT Nation is happy to bring you Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CX, our second mixtape curated by Belgian heavyweights OATHBREAKER! These guys really know how to put together a mix, so hit play below and let the tunes wash over you!

At the end of 2011 we did our first Sonic Cathedrals and obviously a lot has changed since then. The band Oathbreaker has changed, we have changed. So when Sean asked us to do a second series, we were more than happy to oblige. These are the songs that made their mark since the first mixtape. It’s a pretty long ride, but we felt it was worth it. We hope you enjoy them.

Today CVLT Nation is stoked to bring you Sonic Cathedrals Vol XCII Badr Vogu!!! Stream and download below!!

For our mixtape we decided to choose only bands that we felt were influences on Badr Vogu’s sound. We all have pretty eclectic tastes in music as is evidenced in our selections which range from punk to blues to black and death metal to hip-hop. We also intentionally left out more current bands, friend’s bands, etc. as we could each easily curate our own mix-tape just with the amazing crop of bands we have here in the bay area not to mention the rest of the international scene. We hope that most of these bands are recognizable to most of y’all out there and if they aren’t you need to do some homework!

Punk is Dead Fest Mixtape For CVLT Nation

The Punk is Dead Fest is happening on August 30th & 31st in Lancaster, CA! Ticket info here and flyer below! Now enjoy the PIDF mixtape exclusively for CVLT Nation!

The original idea behind Punk Is Dead was to create a powerviolence fest in the vein of Super Sabado Gigante and Fiesta Grande for the new century. But from the seed of a powerviolence/grind fest it grew into a true heavy music festival featuring bands from every subgenre and scene. It includes some of the best up-and-coming local talent, established touring acts, even a couple international bands. From hardcore to crust to doom to death metal, all bases are covered.

This mixtape reflects such diversity. On this mixtape you will find a sampling of what you will find both days of Punk Is Dead. The unrelenting speed of Godstomper and ACxDC, the heady experimentalism
of Vestiges, the oppressively bleak blackened doom of Primitive Man, and the fearless brutality of Skinfather.

Each song offers up something unique, so your ears will never find themselves bored. Feel free to download and enjoy and if you like what you hear, come out to Lancaster on Labor Day weekend and experience it live.

PUNKISDEADrevise2

1. VICE-Since Birth
What sort of heavy music festival would Punk Is Dead be without a NYHC band? Hailing from Staten Island, VICE, with Since Birth display their talent for traditional NY thrash but with a powerviolence twist. Since Birth will be featured on their upcoming LP to be released on Eulogy Recordings.

2. Bone Dance-White Guilt
With the untimely demise of Gaza, Bone Dance is one of the few bands to continue carrying the mathcore torch. Technical but also aggressive, Bone Dance features one of the most expressive vocalists in hardcore today. Absolutely seething with rage, he spits out his lyrics with such venom that you almost believe he’s going to burst out of the speakers and strangle you with his mic cord.

3. Skin Like Iron-Dim Horizon
Sure you can call Skin Like Iron a crust band, but you would be remiss to neglect the other
diverse influences you can pick out in their sound. From crust to d-beat to progressive
hardcore,SLI add an emotional layer to their music that keeps things from getting
stale.

4. Godstomper-Tear Gas Victory
An unreleased track from the legendary powerviolence band. If you are a drum & bass powerviolence band then chances are you are ripping something off from Godstomper. The direct link between the first wave powerviolence bands of yesteryear and the new wave of neoviolence, Godstomper have been going strong for 20+ years now and show no signs of slowing up.

5. Barking Backwards-Brown Dick
An up-and-coming powerviolence band from So Cal, Barking Backwards are not just another garage band, which is evident by their meteoric rise from playing garages to playing support for Infest’s reunion show. Though you can still find them playing a raging backyard show.

6. Plagues-Dull Fangs Against the Concrete
Off of their new EP Perfect State released on Glory Kid Ltd., Dull Fangs Against the Concrete perfectly encapsulates Plagues’s progression from a fast hardcore band to an even heavier metallic hardcore band while still retaining their original powerviolent element.

7. Primitive Man-Antietam
Recently signed to Relapse Records, Primitive Man is more than just a side project of doomgrind band Clinging To The Trees of a Forest Fire. Words cannot describe just how heavy PM can get. Topping everything off are the vocals of Ethan McCarthy; absolutely disgusting, it’s a wonder he can even speak after a live show.

8. AxRxM-Cowboy Suicide
Spazzy and experimental, AxRxM have earned their place among the elites of powerviolence through releases on 625 Thrashcore, To Live A Lie, and ten years of steady playing shows. And while they may not play out as often as they’d like due to their singer teaching english in China, they still find time to squeeze in a handful of shows every summer. Cowboy Suicide is off their last release,2010′s S/T LP.

9. Vestiges-VIII
Another song in their ongoing narrative about Man, Nature and his ultimate impending doom, VIII is an absolute beast of an epic at just over 13 minutes long. But despite its length, VIII never drags and is ultimately rewarding.

10. Malpractice Insurance-Incompetent Negligent Unethical
Yeah Malpractice Insurance are a medically-themed grind band but they are far from a gimmick. They make aggressive technical grindcore with a DIY punk edge. Incompetent Negligent Unethical is off of their latest split with Spanish grindcore band Nashgul. Released on To Live A Lie Records.

11.Jungle Juice-Infect
Jungle Juice are based out of Louisiana and this is reflected in the swampy sludgecore they traffic in. Switching between creepingly slow sludge and the speed of fast hardcore, Jungle Juice continue to evolve with each successive release.

12. Traitor-The Weight of Hope
There has been a surplus of blackened hardcore bands as of late but Traitor manage to add something new to the mix. With tempos often picking it up to grindcore speeds, the vocalist alternates between harsh hardcore barks to ungodly black metal demon shrieks. Bracing to say the least.

13. Skinfather-Succession
Not just another thrash metal band, Skinfather are equal parts Entombed as they are Slayer. Incorporating old school Swedish death metal into their thrash metal roots, Skinfather don’t have to wear denim vests and snapbacks to get their point across.

14. Sky Burial-From Out of Obscured Light
Sky Burial make doomy yet eerily beautiful post-metal that will transport you to another time and place. A time and place when man wasn’t so intent on shitting all over Planet Earth. Much like many of their label-mates on Replenish Records, Sky Burial explores the often times antagonistic relationship between Man and Nature.

15.ACxDC-Eye in the Sky
The most polarizing band in powerviolence, ACxDC have, seemingly overnight, become a magnet for hate from internet trolls. But whether you love them or hate them you cannot deny the manic energy they are able to pack into every single one of their sub-1 minute songs. Case in point: Eye in the Sky, off their 3-way split with fellow grinders Magnum Force and Sex Prisoner. Released earlier this year on the always stellar To Live A Lie Records, this record is sure to end up on plenty of people’s year end best of lists.

16. Final Draft-The Years
Inglewood, always up to no good! Final Draft separate themselves from your run of the mill grindviolence band with just their all consuming hate for everything fucked up around them. The rage is thick and palpable on everything they record but never more so than on their 2012 LP “West World Order”.

17. Bio Crisis-Urbe Violenta
Hailing from the infamously gritty city of Tijuana, Bio Crisis’s tough urban roots is certainly reflected in their music. Fast crusty hardcore with intelligent socio-political lyrics and a polished ear for melodicism, Bio Crisis have already begun making waves in the crust/hardcore scene and you can bet on them having a bright future.

CVLT Nation is stoked to release Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CXIV by VATTNET VISKAR today! This is their 2nd mixtape for us, and we thought it was fitting for them to do a part two since their epic new album, Sky Swallower, is out via Century Media Sept. 3rd in the US and Sept. 9th in Europe. Plus they will be touring the month of September, so check the dates below! So in preparation, sit back, hit play and download!

For our second CVLT Nation mixtape, we wanted to explore a bit. Picking songs that influence us in specific ways is never an easy task, but we came up with something we’re very proud of. We chose these songs as a representation of influences we drew from during the writing and recording process of Sky Swallower. Music is emotional, and emotional cues can be taken from any musical source. Like our last mix, much of this isn’t metal.

DEATHROCK 2013 Mixtape Part Two by Oliver Sheppard

$
0
0

When I started doing these deathrock mixtapes in early 2012, my point was to illustrate that guitar-driven, dark punk in the deathrock tradition was alive and well, still evolving, despite some folks’ stubborn perception of this genre as being “old school.” (And, actually, as a genre that came into its own in the 80s, it’s younger than industrial or some other types of dark music.) Like the broader genre categories of rock ‘n roll, country, or even the blues, the deathrock subgenre is indeed “old school,” and also like those types of music, it isn’t.

So, here’s yet another new assortment of bands, including tracks by what I call “legacy” dark (post-)punk bands like UK Decay, Killing Joke, and The Damned, bands that are still alive and well and who are still cranking out surprisingly good new material. Among the newer bands, Finland has a strong showing here: Masquerade and Silent Scream reassert the primacy of Scandinavia in this genre; and new 12 inchers by bands like Belgrado, Deathcharge, Catholic Spit, and others also reaffirm the innovation that continues in this style of dark music.

This deathrock mix is not meant as an exhaustive or definitive or authoritative compilation. It’s supposed to serve as a springboard for your own sonic exploration. Some of these bands may not consider themselves to be “deathrock” at all; Arctic Flowers, for example, describe their sound as “a mix of punk, deathrock, post punk, and goth.” All of the songs below resonate strongly with, and are relevant to, the development of deathrock/goth-punk/gothic rock in the modern era as a whole, however.

Tracklist below the jump cut. Enjoy.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol CXVIII HUMAN CULL Track List:

Nasum – ‘Silent’
Possibly the most important band to us as grindcore fans, and as Human Cull itself. Their influence is undeniable. This song has been chosen over the many, many great songs they wrote (I honestly can’t think of one I dislike) mainly for that opening riff. All the crush.

Napalm Death – ‘Retreat to Nowhere’
From Enslavement to Obliteration IS grindcore. As an album I don’t think there’s a more perfect example, even over 20 years later. Pick any song from this album to go onto a mixtape or playlist and you’ll hear no complaints from me. I chose this one mainly for Mick’s ‘YEEEEESSS’ at the end.

Insect Warfare – ‘Mind Ripper’
I consider Insect Warfare to be a game-changing band. Everything afterwards has had to step up or be destroyed by their relentless whirlwind assault.

Converge – ‘Bitter and Then Some’
Stepping away from grindcore just slightly to another hugely influential band. Converge have that little extra something over similar bands that I just cannot get enough of.

Bulletridden – ‘Deny the Serpent’
Bristol bolt-throwing deathcrust. Vocals that sound like rotting flesh falling away from a wet corpse. Excellent raging punk to bang your mouldy dreads to.

Giftgasattack – ‘C.B.M.’
A ‘slow’ song from their split with Desperat. This is noisy.

Goatsblood – ‘Drull’
Wretched grinding sludge. The riffs tug at you in horrible ways.

Pig Destroyer – ‘Junkyard God’
For me, and probably a lot of other people my age Pig Destroyer is the first grindcore band I ever really loved. Prowler in the Yard is still one of my favourite albums, making them one of my favourite and most influential bands, even if their later stuff is a bit tired and over-produced…

Assuck – ‘Parade of the Lifeless’
Hammering in the classic grindcore bands early on. Assuck rule. End of story.

Discordance Axis – ‘Pattern Blue’
Weird riffs, mental screaming and endless blasting. Discordance Axis took re-writing the rule book of music and turned it up to 11. Again, undeniable influence, but in ways no other grindcore/hardcore/crust bands ever come close. to.

Wormrot – ‘Erased Existence’
Singapore’s finest wade in to lay waste to everyone with their chaotic and mentally fast blend of everything good that’s come before them. Modern grindcore legends.

Kill the Client – ‘Cleptocracy’
And speaking of modern legends, Kill the Client do a pretty good job of holding up their end of all that is good with grindcore today. Plus one of the best drummers in the business (and a huuuuge influence on my playing personally).

Carnage – ‘Infestation of Evil’
From their only album, and a somewhat left field choice in terms of Swedeath (why not Dismember?!) but this is as evil as the name promises. Metalpunk deathcrush.

Wolfpack – ‘Cinde-fucking-rella’
Could have had a number of Wolfpack songs, but this one has THE chorus of all time. ‘RELLAAAAAARRRRGH!!

Disclose – ‘Tragic End’
What their singer met with and an absolutely thrashing fizzed out d-beat noispunk flaying. Japanese d-beat legends. See below from more Japanese punk at it’s best.

324 – ‘New Rotation’
Japan certainly know how to produce awesome bands. 324 blast harder than pretty much everyone. Deal with it.

In Disgust – ‘Thrown Out’
Heavier than a ton of bricks, flung forward at breakneck speed. Relentless, keep up or be annihilate.

Infest – ‘In His Name’
Infest are the epitome of 90′s US powerviolence, and have influenced a great deal of bands since, right across the global extreme punk scene.

Terrorizer – ‘Injustice’
If you don’t agree with me in saying FETO is the ultimate classic grindcore album, then surely Terrorizer’s “World Downfall” is the alternative. All the blasting and all the riffs.

Magrudergrind – ‘Excommunicated’
After playing with and seeing these guys live earlier this year, I can confirm that Magrudergrind destroy. Everything.

Swans – ‘Cop’
Slow and deliberate no wave. Spoken and chanted vocals ride over an industrial throbbing and scraping. When grindcore bands play slow, this is what they are saluting.

Human Remains – ‘Swollen’
A somewhat unknown classic band, featuring blastbeat stylings from Dave Witte, and some of the coolest and strangest guitar-work in extreme music ever.

Gridlink – ‘The Last Red Shoulder’
MORE BLASTING! Everything is ramped up to mental levels with this band. I Love them.

Gadget – ‘Leaders of the (Rat) Pack’
Swedish grind-lords Gadget sure know how to make some powerful music. Plus as some name dropping, their drummer, William Blackmon mixed some of our records.

No Comment – ‘Past Tense’
Scathing powerviolence legends. Noisy, fast, good.

Dropdead – ‘Bullshit Tradition’
More fast powerviolence done properly. Not much else left to say.

Amebix – ‘Winter’
Formative crust punk that feels like it’s channelling the departed spirit of Ian Curtis.

Crossed Out – ‘He-Man’
My personal favourite 90s US powerviolence band. Seriously pissed off and fucked up, which is exactly how it should be.

Godflesh – ‘Locust Furnace’
Because no mix tape is complete without something oppressive and miserable by Godflesh on it.

The Afternoon Gentlemen – ‘Tache Thrash’
The gents destroy. Every. Damn. Time.

Slayer – ‘Reborn’
Fuckin’ SLLLLAAAAAYYYYYYEEERRRR, you just know man.

DRI – ‘I Don’t Need Society’
Crossover thrash that rips in seriously speedy fashion. Chosen this song because it’s quickly becoming apparent that I really don’t need society.

Cryptic Slaughter – ‘Rage to Kill’
Fast and loose and undeniably influential whether people realise it or not. The building blocks of that thing we all call grindcore…

Repulsion – ‘The Lurking Fear’
Genesis. If I didn’t put Repulsion on here, I might as well not have bothered with anything else. Random song choice because they’re all good.

Doom – ‘War crimes’
The opening sample sets a sombre tone. Unfortunately this suffers from electric kit syndrome, but it’s still a rough-hewn crustgrind classic with killer riffs and vocals.

Ringworm – ‘Death Do us Part’
‘Lies! A Bunch of Fucking Lies!’ The best Holy Terror album.

Six Brew Bantha – ‘Violence Fuels Hatred’
Fast, angry and destructive grindcore. My favourite discovery in recent times has been this album.

Cloud Rat – ‘Widowmaker’
Neo-crust gets a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to people’s opinions, but pushed into grindcore levels of intensity it’s pretty damn effective. Cloud Rat, I think, are an excellent example of this. It’s like emo but all blasting and shit…

Lycanthropy – ‘Primitive Game’
Czech grinders sure know how to go fast. More mental tempo changes and stop-go bits than you can waggle a stick at.

Looking for an Answer – ‘Repugnancia, Aersion Y Odio’
If Mentally Murdered era Napalm Death never ended, it would sound like that, and that is fine by me.

Fear Factory – ‘Self Bias Resistor’
Cos it’s ridiculously heavy and has nice sing along bit too.

Feastem – ‘Working Man Blues’
Feastem are FAST. And I mean really really fast. Having the opportunity to play with them a few times has been a real treat as they totally bring it live. Did I mention they were fast?

Yacopsae – ‘Apokalypsae’
This band rules and this song has whistling in it. I have no other words.

Disrupt – ‘Lack of Intelligence’
US hardcore/crust or whatever you wanna call it, it’s fast, it’s hard, it’s good.

Sepultura – ‘Under Siege’
Classic punked-up death-thrashing, what more can I say about Sepultura at this point?

Unkind – ‘Johtajat Ja Uhrit’
Unkind are great and their sound generally falls somewhere between the expanse of Neurosis and the feral thrashings of early Disfear, except that this is one of their more prolonged tracks. Powerful.

Ladyscraper – ‘Poontang’
A wild card choice from our mate Steve. Horrible in a good way.

The Kill – ‘Second to None’
Australia isn’t well known for producing top quality grindcore bands, but when they do, fuck, are they blistering. The Kill are a prime example of that.

PLF – ‘Unseen Deceiver’
Relentless, blasting riff fest. PLF sound like Assuck on crack. All the good.

Deviated Instinct – ‘Listen to the Sirens’
From the 12″ Nailed ep, upon which DI sounded like a stripped down ‘Heartwork’ era Carcass.
This is a cover of Tubeway Army and combines a surreal atomsphere with their typical bludgeoning approach. A good one to close on.
