Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XCIV Curated by Gehenna

CVLT Nation is psyched to bring you Vol. XCIV of our Sonic Cathedrals series, and the first of our 2nd Anniversary Show lead-up mixtapes, curated by our headliner GEHENNA! Mike Apokalypse has put together a weird mix of epic sound proportions for your upcoming weekend wildness! Check out his intro and the mixtape stream below and download after the jump!

I’m an addict. I’ve been hooked on sounds since I can remember. I catalog sounds, talk about sounds and have spent my life making the sounds I love to hear. I even dream about sounds. It is the one thing that I can’t spend time apart from and I like it all. Yes I said it I like it all. I enjoy hearing beautiful sounds and ugly sounds. The sounds of joy and the sounds of pain both fill me with emotions that are unexplainable. This is why I make music and play music. I want to share my love and my hatred with the world through sound because it is the only thing that makes me feel alive.

I assembled the following Mixtape in a blacked out drunken state last night. I don’t recall recording it and it is almost nothing like the mixtape I’d planned on assembling for Cvlt Nation readers. But when I woke up today and turned on my machines to start making sounds, I saw it on my computer. As I listened back to it I was sort of astonished by how raw it all was. The blends are a choppy and crude. If you’re a music purist (i.e. a boring one-dimensional bozo) the tape will make you sick because the genres of music don’t go together at all. But somehow it sort of works. Anyways, download it, get something to drink, give it a listen, leave a comment and then go check out more sounds by these artists.

CVLT Nation is stoked to offer up to you this week’s Sonic Cathedrals and part II in our 2nd Anniversary mixtape series, Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XCV Curated by Youth Code! These two have put together a mix that smacks you in the face with radness! Stream this mix, read what they have to say below and download after the jump!

This mix is a good representation of influential elements of Youth Code. Seeing as we both came from backgrounds of hardcore and metal,
it would only make sense for us to gravitate towards aggressive forms
of electronic music as well. The industrial scene has a harsh
controlling vibe to it that blends very well with our love of metal
and hardcore… so we tried to put together a good mix that depicts
our tastes in an eclectic, yet true to form standard. Hopefully you
enjoy it and try not to punch the person nearest to you.

CVLT Nation is happy to present the next in our 2nd Anniversary Sonic Cathedrals Mixtape Series, this one curated by STOIC VIOLENCE. This is a cutthroat mix that is going to start your week off right! So stream below and download after the jump!

A brief overview of my current playlist, upcoming releases, and personal favorites. The punk, hardcore, and metal communities are thriving with fresh ideas and interesting concepts based on classic formulas. I really feel that this mix is a variety of extremes, from blistering fast hardcore to slow, guttural death metal. I’ve always been interested in more extreme music and I think this mix represents that well.

There really isn’t much else to say, let the music do the talking.

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. XCIX Curated by Children of God

This week starts the countdown to the CVLT Nation 2nd Anniversary Show, and this mixtape is the last in our 2nd Anniversary series, curated by the almighty Children of God, who will be bringing their blasphemous presence to the stage at Unit B in Santa Ana this Friday! We are so stoked to see them perform live, just as stoked as we are to hear this soundscape they have compiled for us below! Stream, download and enjoy!

I have spent the last 16 years of my life listening to aggressive music. My hearing is starting to go and I’m not as angry as I used to be when I was younger, we, as a band aren’t as angry as we used to be; we are more tempered and more direct and precise with our rage. There are no more “31 seconds of blind rage”, rage is directed clearly, rage has also taken new shapes and has been molded into different sounds and atmospheres; we are still angry, but we are wiser and more calculated.

This mix tape is of bands that I listen to and draw inspiration from. I did not want to make a mix tape of bands that would be typical of us/me to listen to. I think you can hear our inspirations in our music. I wanted this to be the complete opposite realm of sound (for the most part) but with the same sense of urgency and desperation that comes in Children of God’s music. This music allows me to reflect, and reflection is a key to us growing as people.

Enjoy,
Adrian/COG

We are so stoked that Krömosom curated Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CI. This mixtape is pure fucking FIRE FIRE FIRE…So download it NOW and make sure to go see Krömosom on their upcoming tour!

We’ve worked our collective bollocks off since last October to write, rehearse, record and release our new album: Nuclear Reich. Here’s two songs from it plus the pick of our personal influences within Kromosom – we each chose six and then threw in another couple.
Our second tour of the United States kicks off on May 17th – the same day Nuclear Reich comes out on Distort Reality. It’ll take in both coasts plus Maryland Death Fest and Chaos In Tejas – full dates here. We’re battlehardened from an arseload of recent gigs…we’re tighter than ever from weekly rehearsals…we’ve got a new record up our sleeves…and we’re touring with some amazing bands. Anyone who came out and saw us last time (see photos and read the Tour Diary from it here) knows what to expect – violence and friendship! SEE YIS IN HELL!!

Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CI Curated by Krömosom Track List

1. KRÖMOSOM – Nuclear Reich.

2. SKITSLICKERS – Sprackta Snutskallar. “Spräckta Snutskallar or Cracked Cop Skulls is the second track off the GBG 1982 ep. When I first heard this record in the ‘90s (thanx Along Apparattus!), there was nothing like it. Still today, nothing comes close to its ferociousness. No frills just pure barbaric hatred that makes me wanna smash my head on the wall. I hate cops and I love HC. This is Swedish Hardcore!!!” (Yeap)

3. GAUZE – Absinth Trip. “As young lad I became aware that the old folks were all listening to a band called Gauze. I knew if I wanted to have a go of this punk caper I better give it a listen. GOAL! Since hearing it and a few other choice cuts I gravitated to the noisier, more manic end of hardcore. When we played with them a year or two back I got so excited I gave Cormy a lil’ bop to the face. Also the drumming – delish. Knicked a few ideas over the years.” (Panky)

4. KAAOS – Natsit Ja Kommunistit. “Totally raw, out-of-control Finnish Hardcore!! This song is taken from their 1982 ep Totaalinen Kaaos. I first got into Kaaos through trading with Felix at Havoc Records. Since then, I can’t stop listening to them. They draw influences from UKHC bands but also put their own unique and aggressive twist on it. The singer Jakke sounds like he seriously doesn’t give a fuck what you think of him.. he just wanna scream in your face. Kaaos in my mind, is one of the best Finnish bands of that period.” (Yeap)

5. ISTERISMO – Quei Importanti. “Hardcore Inferno from Tokyo Japan. The name of this band pretty much describes the band. I first saw them while I was on tour with my old band Pisschrist in 2009. Their first 7” has long but sold out and collectors are selling them on Ebay for 80usd. Satoshi the singer (very kind fella) gave me his personal copy of the test press. Till today this record has been on constant rotation on my stereo. Isterismo puts Gloom, Wretched, Frigora and early Uk crust bands through a meat grinder to produce their own brand of barraging noise! Erratic explosive burst of rage that leaps out of the vinyl to punch you in the face. This monsters make punk future!!!” (Yeap)

6. LIFE – Victims. “Alongside Gloom, this band was my introduction to the madness of Japanese noisepunk. I think it was Jakob Plaguebearer who introduced me to both soon after I’d moved to Copenhagen. At that time no-one in Ireland except for my mate Eric & I and perhaps a few older chaps we didn’t know were interested in anything like this. The best thing about Life is that they’re so fucking punk but so grindingly intense at the same time; insanely good live.” (Cormy)

7. FRIGÖRA – Mardröm. “You can’t listen to this band without wanting to fucking smash everything. Tokyo maniacs worshipping Swedish HC like only the Japanese can.” (Cormy)

8. KANSAN UUTISET – Economic Appraisal. “My friend James Cody moved to the Netherlands around 2002 and got me the Killed By Finnish Hardcore LP after starting to go out with this mad Finnish girl, which is where I first heard this band. We went to Amsterdam to see Discharge when they first reformed and he gave me a present of it. It was supposed to be with Cal but he quit days before the gig and Rat stepped in. Around then I’d only heard Appendix, and this LP was a whole new world. Suomi ’83 is unlike anything else.” (Cormy)

9. KURO – Dead Heat 10000V. “One of my favorite Japanese bands alongside Lip Cream, The Execute and Deathside, however I often feel Kuro are probably one of the more original groups to come out of the early ‘80s scene. Kuro definetly have their own sound, one that’s rarely imitated.” (Yeap)

10. ANTI-CIMEX – Warmachine. “This was one of the first true hardcorepunk bands I got into. After going from being a teenage metalhead to getting into youth crew and posicore stuff and then finding out about fast brutal hardcore and powerviolence, this shit blew my fucking head off around the age of twenty. My friend and punk mentor Rob Levinge made me a tape of everything from Dropdead & Crudos to Crossed Out & No Comment to SS Decontrol & Negative Approach. He followed it up with the likes of Crucifix and Mob 47 and after that I was done for. Heavy depression hit me and I stopped drinking to try and control it and started redirecting all my spare cash to various Euro distros with exotic tape lists. This is how I first heard Disclose, Disrupt, Discontrol and a hundred others. Anything with “dis” in the title or which claimed influence by Mob47, I’d buy it. I got the two Cimex demos + this 7″ with the Shitlickers recordings on the B side and listened to it until the tape broke. They’re still my two favourite Swedish bands of all time.” (Cormy)

11. DISORDER – Education. “Fucked up noisy punk. Very rough and potent; a noise to get glued by Disorder’s lyrics embody everything that I feel towards life and humanity.” (Luke)

12. GLOOM – Uranium Bullet For Peace. “This band is a masterclass in hardcore noise punk. It took me a while to ‘get’ them; it’s not an easy listen, but this is one of their catchier songs. After you’ve gotten into entry level Japanese noisey crusty punk like Disclose, Abraham Cross or Reality Crisis, it’s time to give the real mad shit a go: Gloom. Their Friendly And Violence credo is right at the heart of Kromosom.” (Cormy)

13. CONFUSE – Indignation. “I’d like to think that more than one chaos punk accidentally got into noize simply because Confuse look so fucking cool – or at least I hope so! This song’s a fuckin classic.” (Cormy)

14. GAI – Blood Spit Night. “These three* bangers are a great soundtrack to ruining someone else’s night whilst having a blast. Drink, yell and let your hair down.” (Panky)

15. DISCHARGE – Mania For Conquest. “The best song on the WHY album. Discharge as we all know are one of the most important bands in punk history. Its only fair they get due credit.” (Luke)

16. KRÖMOSOM – Culture Degeneration.

17. COCKNEY REJECTS – Headbanger. “Oi was pretty big in the 90′s in Malaysia. Besides England belong to me. Some kids I went to high school with played The Rejects a lot. I didn’t get them then. A few years ago I started listening to them again. The Rejects are hard music without even trying to be hard. They are hard as fuck people who will knock your teeth out if you get in their way! When I out drinking and partying with me mates, this is the tune is playing in my head.” (Yeap)

18. THE EXPLOITED – Sex & Violence. *check GAI above (Panky)

19. CHAOS UK – Army. “I’ve always felt a strong connection with this band. Simplistic, unrelenting and in your face. I reckon Chaos UK have more of an influence on modern crust punk than a lot of people give them credit for, particularly their Short Sharp Shock album. Anthemic and angry lyrics that hit home for every punk.” (Luke)

20. CRUX – Keep On Running. “Tune. In a style that can easily become plodding and dull Crux show the power of belting it out with energy. Came to mind as it’s been looping in my head all week, but so has Errol by Australian Crawl. Crux wins by a whisker.” (Panky)
21. TAMPAX – UFO Dictator. *check GAI above (Panky)

22. MOTÖRHEAD – Rock ‘n’ Roll. “Very important to my appreciation of NWOBHM. And you simply can’t beat the way Lemmy spits those venomous lyrics at you. Rock ‘n’ Roll is the devils music.” (Luke)

23. DEATHSIDE – Burning Spirit. “This was the band that got me into real Japanese HC, as in the style which shares its name with this song. Trading my old band’s 12″ with a bunch of Japanese record stores in the early 2000s introduced me to a ton of insane music which had previously been spoken of in hushed tones and was nigh-on impossible to get hold of other than on scrabbly mix tapes from scene elders. None of this was available in Ireland. On first hearing it I was just perplexed; “this isn’t punk…but I want to hear it again”. Bet On The Possibilty went on to become one of my top five albums of all time. If you get into just one Burning Spirits Hardcore band…this.” (Cormy)

24. POISON IDEA – Feel The Darkness. “This is one of the darkest songs ever written by the punkest band of all time; allegedly the sordid tale of Jerry A’s girlfriend’s murder at the hands of a serial killer. If you’ve not spent time with this album you’ve badly neglected yourself. Sort it out.” (Cormy)

25. COLOURED BALLS – Whole Lotta Shakin’. “Nothing makes me wanna play music as much the Coloured Balls. A song you can really nod at ya mates and tap your foot to.” (Panky)

26. THE CURE – One Hundred Years. “My favourite Cure song. The repetitive tribal drumming, minimalistic bass and the eerie guitar sets the landscape for ol’ Robbie Smith to take you on a journey into terror. I usually can’t stand this shit but this song has always been cool.” (Yeap)

27. BAUHAUS – God In An Alcove. “Pete Murphy, amazing lyricist and vocalist. There’s something haunting about Bauhaus that make them unique compared to all other post-punk bands.” (Luke)

28. THE PRODIGY – Claustrophobic Sting. “There’s no other album in the world on par with Music For The Jilted Generation. It’s basically a punk album. The menace and churn here present is of equal intensity with any hardcore ever produced in Scandinavia, the United States or the Far East. When I was a kid you were either a rocker or a raver but I was both, until I was a teenager anyway. Every time I have a challenge ahead tracks like this and Skylined from the same album are what I’ll listen to…insanely good hype-up music.” (Cormy)

Text by Sam HaiNe

You never quite know what will cross your path late at night while aimlessly trekking through the internet. Amidst the various obscure word searches you might just find something worth your time. This is exactly the case when I somehow stumbled upon this mixtape from Purple Tape Pedigree & Steady Bloggin’.

Screwing Yourself To Live: A Chopped & Slowed Tribute To Black Sabbath, is a collection of Black Sabbath songs that have been meticulously slowed and throwed by Geng-Grizzly.

If you haven’t the slightest clue what chopped & screwed is, it is the remixing of songs by slowing the tempo down to between 60 and 70 quarter-note beats per minute and using techniques such as scratches, doubles and stop-time to chop the song into a chopped up version of its original. This technique was first developed in Houston, Texas by the late DJ Screw and has grown in popularity into its own sub-culture.

The result of this on Black Sabbath results in something rare and successful. Why is very simple; slowing the tempo down will either reveal sloppy production or highlight exceptional production. Black Sabbath still to this day is one of the best bands of musicians ever to play. The slower/screwed tempos here put breathing room between each instrument and give them defined textures, often turning riffs into walls of distorted doom and blues. The vocals are dropped down to their lowest level with an almost non-human effect. Throw in some film samples throughout the mixtape and you have here my friends a darkly fuzzed out head trip down to the bottom of a codeine bottle.

Today we are super stoked to present you with Sonic Cathedrals Vol CIII Curated by LYCUS! We have always had a huge amount of respect for these doom bringers, so we are more than excited to have them put together a mix that has influenced them! Stream and download below!

Hey guys. These are some of our personal favorite songs at the moment. Music helps us all cope with the sometimes brutal and outright depressing realities of modern life, and therefore is tremendously vital to our existence. The songs we’ve selected for this mix tape have helped us through a lot of shit, and we would love to share them with you all. For this mix tape we had each member of the band contribute 30 minutes worth of music. The order is as follows: Jackson 0:00 – 29:57, Dylan 29:57 – 58:05, Daniel 58:05 – 1:22:35, Trevor 1:22:35 – 1:16:15. Hope you enjoy listening to this mix tape as much as we enjoyed making it! Cheers!

CVLT Nation Label Mixtape Series Curated by Aborted Society

It’s bizarre to think that this label is now 13 years old; what started out as an art project and supplement to a print zine quickly kind of spiraled into much more than we ever anticipated. This mix represents the second half of ABSOC’s discography, and is intended to showcase the direction we have taken over the last 5 years or so. While all of these bands are quite different in nature, the one thing they all hold in common (outside of all of them being very nice people) is that they are all breaking out of typical genre molds and are doing something unique, while staying firmly rooted in DIY punk. We really try to identify bands we think are pushing the envelope, and keeping the underground challenging and provoking.

We are basically an analog label; our releases are all largely on vinyl and cassettes (very few CDs), and our only foray into digital distribution is via MP3 download cards. We really believe a record should be experienced with artwork, layout, and lyrics when available, and really put effort into making packaging unique. We are based in Seattle, and have largely focused on Northwest bands until recently with collaborations with partner labels in Sweden, Germany, and Canada.

We’d really like to thank Sean and Meghan and everyone involved at CVLT NATION for all of their amazing support over the past few years! And cheers to all of you whom have ordered from us, supported the label and came to the shows and tours we promote. It’s been an amazing ride and we are really excited for this upcoming year’s releases which will include the s/t debut full length from INSIDIOUS PROCESS, early 8” lathe and demo releases put to 12” by NÜ-KLĒ-ƏR BLAST SUNTAN, a re-issue of early material from KALASHNIKOV (Italy), and an upcoming split between ADELIT@S and KOHOSH (Seattle). Keep it DIY!

Sonic Cathedrals CIV Curated by Corrupt Moral Altar Track List

In It for Life – Extreme Noise Terror (E.N.T/Filthkick Split)
Classic E.N.T what more can you ask for – punk as fuck.

The World Keeps Turning – Napalm Death (Utopia Banished)
There are just so many classic ND songs, so went for one of the first ones I heard, still sounds powerful today.

Destroy The Opposition – Dying Fetus (Destroy The Opposition)
Speaks for itself really, brutal technical death metal at its finest.

Ikaruga – Discordance Axis – (D.A./324/Corrupted Split)
We couldn’t pick a track from their Inalieneable Dreamless album since they are all so fucking good, so instead opted for their final recorded track.

Lizard-Skin Barbie – Burnt By the Sun – (Burnt By the Sun EP)
A big influence On CxMxA, this came out before Dave Witte joined Municipal Waste, such a shame they split up.

Handed to you – Outbreak (Failure)
We could have picked any track from “Failure”.

Screaming At A Wall – Minor Threat (Minor Threat: Complete Discography)
Minor Threat! They managed to get one of the worst and most amazing guitar tones at the same time, utter brilliance. Everyone should own their complete discography.

Throne Of Blood – Look Back And Laugh (S/T #2)
Another band that died out too quick, named after the classic Minor Threat song.

Lock Up The Poor – Assert (Insurrection Rocks)
I was a huge Assert fan growing up, they had that sense of urgency.

Won’t Be Denied – Stampin’ Ground (Demons Run Amok)
From Stampin Ground’s first album. The punk roots show through more on this first record.

Dukes Of Nothing – Iron Monkey (Ruined By Idiots: Live And Unleashed)
Such a shame they never recorded a third album. These live tracks showed what direction they were headed in before they split up, which was so angry and pissed off. One of our biggest Influences.

I Hate You – Grief (Come To Grief)
Not enough people listen to Grief, that guitar rumble…

Pass Some Down – Brutal Truth (Kill Trend Suicide)
Brutal Truth! I love the sound of this EP. The riffs are just all over the fucking place.

Godly Beings – Obituary (Slowly We Rot)
Had to have at least one Obituary song on here. Ugggg!

Thrones of Blood – Suffocation (Pierced From Within)
SLAM! One of the tightest death metal bands ever. Truly crushing live.
A huge influence on our slower sections on the upcoming CxMxA album.

Drunk With Power – Discharge (Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing)
 NO DISCHARGE = NO DBEAT.

Hitchhiker – Macabre (Dahmer) The whole Dahmer album is amazing, the way they switch from crushing chugging to manic speed.

Landfills Of Extinct Possibility – Agoraphobic Nosebleed (The Poacher Diaries)
The songs on this release sounded completely different to everything doing the rounds at the time, world ending aggression.

Brainwashed – Nuclear Assault (Survive)
Catchy as fuck, crossover at its best.

They – From Ashes Rise (Nightmares LP)
The dischordant guitar harmonies on all From Ashes Rise material is still mind blowing.

Bringin’ It Down – Judge (What It Meant: The Complete Discography)
I am not straight edge but have always respected it and have been a big fan of many early sXe bands. Such passion and hatred no matter what the message.

Lightswitch – Black Army Jacket (222)
Another great Dave Witte band who never got the attention they deserved.

Ripped In Half – Armour Of God (Armour Of God/3rd Stone split)
Armour Of God were awesome! Such a shame they only did 3 tracks before they split and Johnny Morrow passed away.

The Scourge – Erosion (Thoughts)
Not enough people have heard of Erosion, pure aggro German Thrash/HxC. Thoughts was their best record.

Not Even Phased – Spazz (Crush Kill Destroy)
Could have picked any Spazz track from Crush Kill Destroy, another really big influence.

Strange Soup – Capitalist Casualties (Disassembly Line)
Capitalist Casualties rule in every conceivable way.

Tax Evasion – Disgust (War Deterrent)
Awesome Japanese D-Beat, they totally nailed the early ENT sound!

CVLT Nation is stoked to present Sonic Cathedrals Vol. CV Curated by Hexis going live today! This mix is sure to make your day, so stream and download below!

This mixtape is curated by Filip from Hexis and contains both newer and older stuff that I really enjoy. Most of it is bands that I have been listen to for a long time, both smaller and bigger names. No specific genres, just music that I love and which have a special place in my heart

1. Celeste – Ces Belles de Rêve aux Verres Embués
I have been the biggest fan of this band since the very beginning and they are just getting better and better from album to album. They really put new standards to music! Without any doubt, my all time favorite band! I can’t count how many times I have been listening to the ‘Morte(s) Nee(s)’ album on repeat.

2. Shora – Erode/Implode
Such a talented and underrated band. The split they did with Merzbow and the EP ‘Shaping The Random’ is really what got me into this kind of music. I think if it wasn’t because of Shora, then I wouldn’t play the kind of music that I do today. Very talented musicians and songwriters

3. Khanate – No Joy
I have actually only known about this band for a little more than two years. But they have been on repeat since then, specially because the vocals are fucking good. I hope for a reunion tour someday!

4. Thou – Grissecon
The best sludge band ever! And one of the best live bands I have ever seen! Perfect band.

5. Deafheaven – Dream House
This band started almost at the same time as we did and they have already achieved so much. I have so much respect for George and Kerry for putting almost their whole life into this band! Dream House is a masterpiece.

6. The Secret – Cross Builder
Awesome band, and this track is evil as fuck!

7. This Gift Is A Curse – Inferno AD O.
Best track from our favorite touring mates!

8. The Psyke Project – The End
This is the band who got me into more chaotic music and they are actually the band I have seen live the most times. Their new album Guillotine is awesome! The best band we’ve got here in Denmark.

9. Jim Fear – Goodbye Sweet Machinegun
A Danish band that existed for some years, released an album and then broke up. But they were fucking great!

10. A Light In The Attic – Even Plagues
Another underrated band that it’s almost impossible to find any info about. They are from the US and I saw them here in Copenhagen almost 10 years ago, I bought a split with them and this track has blown my head off since.

11. Kaospilot – When The Wind Turns Her Hand
Tight as fuck album. One of my favorite Screamo records.

12. Admiral Angry – Sex With A Stranger
Heavy as fuck! ‘Buster‘ is a fucking great album.

13. Blackfilm – Come and see
My favorite ambient music! Really dark and atmospheric stuff.

14. Marilyn Manson – Long Hard Road out of Hell
I remember when I was a small kid and was totally scared by this guy, but some years later I actually became a big fan of him. Manson’s music will always have a special place in my heart. Most of the music he released from 1996 to 2001 is fucking good!

15. Nine Inch Nails – A Warm Place
Trent Reznor is a fucking genius and I can’t wait to see him live again this summer! Together with Manson, these are the two ‘bands’ I have been listening to for the longest time.
